Dive Survey
Each year the BSAC produces an incident report. The incidents are referenced to a background of two million dives carried out each year in the UK. The aim of this survey is to verify or otherwise the two million dives carried out. In June at various key sites divers will be asking you for you help in answering some general questions related to your experience and qualifications. Names will not be taken.
To help us identify 8 key sites in Southern Region, can each branch identiy 3 sites it dives from or at within Southern Region.
Please send an e-mail with your three sites to southern.coach@bsac.com. Title your e-mails with "Dive Survey" please.
Thanks Mike

Mixed Gas Instructor & ERD Instructor Workshops
BSAC Southern Region
Sports Mixed Gas (“SMG”) and Advanced Mixed Gas (“AMG”) Instructors
BSAC has introduced mixed gas diver training courses. The first is a Sports Mixed Gas diver course which can be completed in two days and qualifies a diver to 50m using mixed gas. If the divers completing the SMG course complete a third day of training they would be qualified to dive to 60m. The other course is the Advanced Mixed Gas course, which will qualify divers to 80m
The region needs to ensure that it has sufficient SMG and AMG Instructors to meet the anticipated demand in the Southern Region from members who wish to qualify as SMG or AMG divers.
It is expected that the initial demand from members will be for SMG training as this is a initial mixed gas course offered by BSAC. The region therefore needs to ensure, initially, that it has the requisite number of SMG instructors to meet the initial demand and then to develop the instructor base to meet the demand for AMG training. It is estimated that the region requires 10 SMG Instructors to meet the initial anticipated demand for SMG training which will hopefully increase over time. AMG instructors will also be needed and the estimated initial requirement is for 4 AMG instructors.
We expect that the instructor requirement for the 2008 season will be primarily for SMG instructors and that the need for AMG instructors will start in the 2009 season.
Instructors need to be approved by instructor trainers to teach these courses. The region will need to qualify instructors in order to run these mixed gas courses.
The region has set up a programme to qualify instructors as SMG or AMG instructors. The programme is open to all BSAC Openwater Instructors who are also qualified advance nitrox instructors and have the necessary mixed diving gas experience. Anyone who qualifies as either a SMG or AMG instructor will also be granted approved ERD instructor status.
The instructor standards for a SMG instructor are set out on the BSAC website at www.bsac.org/uploads/documents/Resources/Technical_Diver/SMG_Diver_Syllabus_v00.pdf. Please note that the standard states that the instructor requires 100 hours of varied mixed gas experience whereas the SMG syllabus at http://www.bsac.org/uploads/documents/Resources/Technical_Diver/SMG_Diver_Syllabus_v00.pdf states that the requirement is 50 hours of varied mixed gas experience. The region understands that the requirement as stated in the SMG syllabus of 50 hours is the correct level of experience needed i.e. 50 hours.
The instructor standards for an AMG instructor are set out on the BSAC website at http://www.bsac.org/uploads/documents/Resources/Technical_Diver/Standard_BSAC_OC_AMG_Instr_V01.pdf.
The region is inviting people who are interested in qualifying as either a SMG or an AMG approved instructor to complete the attached Mixed Gas Instructor Application Form (Appendix A) and return it to the Southern Region Technical Diver Training Co-ordinator, Angus Saunders, angussaunders@btinternet.com no later than Friday, 15th June
Instructors who apply to be granted approved instructor status as either SMG or AMG instructor will be invited to attend the workshops being run by the Southern Region.
The workshops consist of:
• Training day where the required skills (which are clearly set out in the respective syllabi available from the BSAC website http://www.bsac.org/page/429/open-circuit-mixed-gas.htm ) will be demonstrated with the opportunity to practice these skills under the supervision of an Instructor Trainer (being planned for June 2007)
• Training day for everyone to polish their skills in advance of the Instructor Workshop (being planned for August/September)
• An Instructor Workshop under the supervision of an Instructor Trainer (September/October). The detailed content of the Instructor Workshop will be sent to all interested instructors once it becomes available from BSAC HQ. Candidates who successful complete the Instructor Workshop will be granted approved instructor status as either a SMG or an AMG Instructor.
Any Nitox instructor who wishes to become an ERD Instructor can also join the training
